Expanding surgical training access: A phacoemulsification course via Orbis Cybersight
To highlight the potential of openly accessible online surgical courses in strengthening global ophthalmic education. We demonstrate a case study focusing on a basic phacoemulsification training course published on Orbis Cybersight, designed to support early surgical learning for ophthalmologists worldwide. We developed a one-hour, self-paced online course on the basics of phacoemulsification, split into six narrated modules: Incisions, Capsulorhexis, Hydrodissection, Nucleus Removal, Cortex Removal, and IOL Insertion & Wound Closure. We included quizzes for self-testing in every module. We published the course on Orbis Cybersight, a global telemedicine and training platform, and made it freely available on demand. We analyzed engagement patterns and gathered informal feedback from trainees and educators across different regions. The course was published on Orbis Cybersight, where it became part of the platform’s growing library of ophthalmic educational content. The course was accessed by trainees from multiple countries and is one of the most popular on the platform. While Cybersight often showcases complex or unusual surgical cases, we focused on basic, foundational steps that all trainee ophthalmologists must master. This case study highlights multiple takeaways for structured courses intended for international trainees in diverse settings. Firstly, the narrated format offers practical guidance in a clear, straightforward manner. Secondly, the modular design allows trainees to learn at their own pace, and the built-in quizzes reinforce the learning highlights of each section. Thirdly, formal feedback collection helps in adjusting the content according to diverse needs. Finally, a succinct, widely accessible demonstration of bread-and-butter cases, such as phacoemulsification cataract removal, can be hugely impactful, especially where direct mentorship and hands-on training may not always be available. Such simple, widely accessible educational tools can complement traditional learning environments. Open-access platforms like Orbis Cybersight can play a key role in delivering foundational surgical education. These platforms help bridge gaps in training and promote equity in surgical education. They are impactful for sharing complex cases and essential foundational learning, without adding a financial burden for trainees globally. Our case study offers a scalable, low-cost way to help global trainees gain exposure to essential surgical steps and concepts.
