Effect of type of metal crystal lattice on formation of surface layer of workpiece and type of chips during cutting

It is shown that the difference in the type of chips, in particular, when cutting carbon steels with a BCC grating, compared with processing a titanium alloy with a GPU grating, is due to the presence of two sliding systems. This circumstance does not allow titanium alloys to provide the necessary deformation hardening in the chip formation zone and restore atomic bonds after the formation of a chip element on the sliding plane during cutting, which affects the chip’s elementality.

Abstract

It is shown that the difference in the type of chips, in particular, when cutting carbon steels with a BCC grating, compared with processing a titanium alloy with a GPU grating, is due to the presence of two sliding systems. This circumstance does not allow titanium alloys to provide the necessary deformation hardening in the chip formation zone and restore atomic bonds after the formation of a chip element on the sliding plane during cutting, which affects the chip’s elementality.
