Discussions That Divide: The Interplay Between Experiencing Uncivil Conversations and Politically Motivated Avoidance on Whatsapp and Facebook

This study examines how experiences of incivility in political conversations influence selective avoidance on WhatsApp and Facebook in Brazil, using a national survey. Using national survey data, we find that being targeted by incivility in political discussions consistently predicts avoidance behavior on both platforms, despite their different affordance and networks. However, exposure to disagreement shows platform-specific effects, with WhatsApp users more likely to disengage, highlighting the potential for uncivil discussions to undermine close social relationships. These findings highlight the importance of platform affordances and interpersonal dynamics in shaping political behavior online, offering insights into selective avoidance in private messaging environments.
