The integration of European league-qualified players in Indonesian football: impact on training strategies and motivation of young athletes

This study aims to analyze the impact of the naturalization of football players in Indonesia on the youth athlete development system, the training methods applied, and the motivation of young players. A qualitative approach with a case study method was used, involving young players, coaches, and football academies in Indonesia, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis using NVivo 12 Plus. The findings indicate that the naturalization program for football players significantly influences training methods and the motivation of young athletes in Indonesia. The presence of naturalized players raises standards of technique, tactics, and discipline, encourages the adoption of more modern training methods, and enriches the national team’s playing strategy. However, the impact on the motivation of young athletes is dual: some are inspired to improve their work ethic, while others experience competitive pressure that may reduce their playing opportunities. Therefore, a balanced policy is necessary to ensure that naturalization strengthens national football development without undermining the regeneration of local players.
