Making kin in the technogloom: attempts at finding AI voices
With this article, I propose the technogloom, an original concept, as one of the possible frameworks for understanding the relationship between humans and contemporary technologies, especially artificial intelligence, whatever it might mean. In the emerging and unexplored field of AI and theatre, voice has and will have a central and focal point. Scholars and artists need new concepts, frameworks, and trajectories to navigate the new field. This article tracks back six years of practice as research. I have engaged with the concept of Artificial Intelligence and its relation to Voice, mainly focusing on synthetic voices, solitude, and alienation. Making kin, in-between, and the technogloom constituted the theoretical framework within which I moved, whilst voice, AI, and mainly synthetic voices in performance, the field I explored. The article could be read as a genealogy of the technogloom and how it emerged through my practice or even as a provocation to the term ‘artificial intelligence’ itself.
