An Enhanced Inset-fed Rectangular Microstrip Patch Antenna with Parasitic Structures and Slots for Ka-Band and 28GHz mm-Wave Deployments

The objective of this research is to present an innovative modified microstrip rectangular patch antenna featuring rectangular and circular of slots and parasitic structures. The substrate chosen for this antenna design is a 1mm thick slab of Rogers-RT5880, characterized by a dielectric constant of 2.2 and high electrical efficiency, having a tan δ of 0.0009. Specifically tailored for operation at 28 GHz, a widely adopted frequency band for 5G network, the desired microstrip patch antenna exhibits exceptional performance. At its centered frequency of 28.02 GHz, the proffered antenna demonstrates a remarkable return loss of -37.49 dB. Operating within the Ka-band, which is highly sought after for 5G mm-wave communication, the antenna holds significant promise as it promises a return loss of -32.15dB at 28 GHz. Employing HFSS, a comprehensive electromagnetic analytical investigation has been conducted to evaluate the proposed antenna. Its individual component effectively transforms stored energy into electromagnetic waves, resulting in elevated efficiency and gain. The compact dimensions of the proposed antenna, measuring 36mm2, make it ideal for integration into compact 5G devices. With a gain of 3.46dBi, the proposed antenna exhibits desirable performance characteristics. This paper provides an elaborate examination of the design evolution, highlighting the enhancement techniques employed and their impact on return loss. Furthermore, various parameters of the final structure including E-H patterns, VSWR Plot, Gain Plot, and Impedance Plot, are thoroughly investigated.
