Algorithm for Pilot Current Differential Protection Based on Wideband Quantities

With the intensification of global energy shortages and environmental pollution issues, wind power generation as a clean energy source capable of large-scale development and utilization has experienced rapid growth in recent years. Currently, the dominant turbine type is the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG), whose fault characteristics exhibit distinct differences from traditional synchronous generators. For transmission lines employing pilot protection as the primary scheme, the sensitivity of current differential protection tends to degrade, while operational performance of directional elements, distance elements, and phase selection elements all present varying degrees of challenges. To address these issues, this paper proposes a pilot current differential protection algorithm based on wide-frequency components, establishes key parameter setting criteria and sensitivity verification methodology, and validates the protection operational characteristics through simulation studies under various fault scenarios including different fault types, locations, and transient resistance conditions.
