Optimization Control Methodology for High Efficiency Variable Speed Standalone Wind Energy System with PMSG

This proposed work presents control methodology for voltage at load of the 5KW PMSG-based variable speed stand-alone wind energy conversion system. This paper presents the Ziegler-Nichols (ZN) tuned PID controller in a boost converter for the purpose of controlling the voltage of a two-stage stand-alone Wind Energy Conversion System. As the voltage of the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) varies with the change in wind speed, a ZN-tuned PID-controlled boost converter is placed in order to provide a constant DC link voltage to the input of the voltage source inverter. The generated voltage of PMSG is delivered to a load through an uncontrolled diode rectifier, a ZN-tuned PID controller in a boost converter and a three-phase inverter. To provide a cost-effective solution, a single closed-loop control of the active switch in the boost converter is used to maintain a regulated constant voltage for the loads throughout the two-stage wind conversion system. The control approach is effective in both variable wind speed and variable load conditions. The proposed work has been performed by using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The THD of the inverter output voltage has been verified at 1.04% in coherence with IEEE-519 standards.
