Bidirectional and Symmetric Next Generation PON Incorporating Fronthaul FSO links for Beyond 5G
Contrary to conventional passive optical networks (PONs), the next generation PONs (NG-PON) is aimed to be backhaul fiber and frontend free space optics (FSO) links to maintain high throughput, high bandwidth and long-haul communication. A bidirectional and symmetric 4×10Gbps NG-PON architecture incorporating fronthaul FSO links for beyond fifth generation network is investigated in this paper. Results indicates that architecture offers maximum optical fiber range of 55km in downlink and 42km in uplink at fixed 10m FSO range under clear air. Also, faithful FSO range of 310m in downlink and 210m in uplink direction under clear air at fixed 10km fiber range. At 10−9 bit error rate of, highest 10km fiber+100m FSO range is obtained with maximum beam divergence of 4.5 and 4mrad in downlink and uplink direction respectively. This work also indicates optimum performance over literature works.
