Design of a Dual-Input SEPIC Converter for Powering a Base Transceiver Station Using PV and Battery Backup

Telecommunication towers require a continuous and reliable power supply, particularly in remote or off-grid locations where grid access is limited. This paper provides the design and implementation of a Dual-Input Single-Output (DISO) SEPIC Converter to provide power supply to the Base Transceiver Station (BTS) of a triangular telecom tower from an integrated photovoltaic (PV) energy source backed up by a battery. The suggested topology successfully controls power from different sources with stable voltage control under changing input conditions. Closed-loop control method with a Proportional-Integral (PI) controller is employed for the improvement of system stability, the minimization of voltage ripple, and maximizing efficiency. Simulations using MATLAB Simulink were performed for open-loop and closed-loop systems' performance comparison and showed improved efficiency and improved voltage stability in the closed-loop system.
