Microstrip Antenna for Non-Destructive Metal Crack Detection

This paper proposes the design and application of a novel microstrip antenna for non-destructive detection of metal cracks. The proposed antenna operates effectively over a wide frequency range, making it highly suitable for detecting and analyzing materials without causing damage. The design is simulated using High-Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) to ensure optimal performance, with parameters such as S11, gain, efficiency, and VSWR meticulously analyzed. The antenna features a hexagonal patch design, chosen for its compact size, ease of fabrication, and versatility in detecting structural anomalies. A comprehensive experimental study demonstrates the antenna’s capability to detect cracks in aluminum, with results indicating distinct changes in the S-parameter measurements corresponding to the presence and characteristics of cracks.
