Examination of the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of As-Cast Al-Zn Alloy after Heat Treatment
In our present work the liquid metallurgy method was used for the casting of Al-Zn alloys. The cast aluminum-zinc alloy was submitted to T6 heat treatment. The fabricated Al-Zn alloy was tested for its mechanical and fracture properties. Additionally, the as-cast Al-Zn alloys experienced post heat treatment. The heat treatment includes the solid solution treatment for a period of 2h at 550°C. Following this, the second process was conducted for 2 - 20 h at 190°C in steps of 2 h.One of the most reliable methods used was the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) which can be used to identify microstructural phases. In relation to the presentation of Al-Zn alloys, point out, decimal grain size, dendritic arms spreading, and the forming together of equiaxed grains. In a micro metallurgical courses of events (ICM) the in situ metallographic test ascertained the presence of dendritic pattern. the zone provides for the development of dendritic networks of structure and coincides with the majority of the peri grain nuclei formation during the solidification of the liquidmetal. The Microhardness of as-cast heat treated Al-Zn alloys were investigated as per ASTM E384 standard test. The investigation of all tested samples’ tensile strengths was conducted following the ASTM E8 test criteria. Consequentially, at 16h of ageing, the percentage of the elongation to failure of the alloy dropped in the heat-treated as-cast Al-Zn alloys.Present investigation concluded that As- Cast Al-Zn alloys have showed higher mechanical properties. Improved fracture toughness characteristics were observed in heat treated alloys.
