A Noval Modified Dual-Band Microstrip Patch Antenna with Different Slots for V-Band and Ka-Band mmWave Applications

A 28 GHz and 41 GHz dual-band microstrip patch antenna was constructed using Rogers RT/Duroid 5880 substrate having thickness as 0.254 mm and HFSS. The patch dimensions are 3.5 mm x 2.5 mm x 0.035 mm. The design features return losses of -33.44 dB at 28.0700 GHz and -26.0487 dB at 41.0075 GHz. The development process involved six steps. In the first step, a simple patch was constructed without any slots. In the second step, an 'H' shaped slot was added in the patch, achieving a frequency of 48.7700 GHz with a return loss of -35.7593 dB. In step 3, two rectangular strips were cut on either side of the 'H' slot, enabling multiple frequency bands: 45.1475 GHz, 49.1150 GHz, 57.2225 GHz, 77.5775 GHz, and 86.2025 GHz with return losses of -10.1077 dB, -22.9505 dB, - 11.0984 dB, -23.3419 dB, and -12.4829 dB respectively. In step 4, further complex design achieved dual-band frequencies at 33.2450 GHz and 71.1950 GHz with return losses of -36.5772 dB and -15.428 dB. In step 5, slots were introduced in the ground for improved return loss. In the final step, additional slots in the ground optimized the design to achieve target frequencies of 28.0700 GHz and 41.0075 GHz. The final design’s gain is 3.5975 dB at 28 GHz and 2.3843 dB at 41 GHz.
