Analysis of the nutritional chemical composition of premium and super premium dry food for adult dogs

Eight samples from different brands of dry food for adult dogs were evaluated, with four belonging to the premium segment and four to the super premium segment, all marketed in agricultural supply stores and pet shops in the municipality of São Sebastião do Paraíso (MG). In a specialized laboratory, the food samples underwent physicochemical analyses for acid hydrolysis ether extract, crude protein, mineral matter, and moisture and volatiles, in triplicate, following methodologies recommended by the Brazilian Compendium of Animal Feed. The obtained values were compared with those declared on the packaging by the manufacturers. Of the eight analyzed samples, five including two from the premium segment and three from the super premium segment had ether extract values lower than those declared on the labels by the manufacturers. Regarding crude protein content, three premium samples and one super premium sample did not meet the minimum declared on the labels. In terms of mineral matter content, two premium samples and one super premium sample exceeded the maximum percentage allowed and declared on the labels. All eight samples showed moisture and volatile levels below the maximum specified on the labels. Disparities in the nutritional composition of premium and super premium dog food for adult dogs were observed compared to the values declared on the labels by the manufacturers, highlighting the need for strict regulation by the authorities responsible for the pet food sector to improve the quality of life and longevity of dogs.
