DSpace as a Means of Building an Electronic Archive of Theses and Dissertations

The relevance. In the context of growing demands for academic integrity and transparency, theses and dissertations are becoming key indicators of students’ and researchers’ scholarly achievements. Providing open access to these works not only promotes transparency in education but also fosters the development of academic culture. Traditional methods of storing such documents in paper format no longer meet the modern requirements of accessibility, interoperability, and long-term digital preservation. DSpace, a widely adopted open-source repository system, offers a flexible, scalable, and standards-compliant infrastructure that supports the goals of digital transformation in higher education. These features make DSpace a powerful and practical solution for building institutional electronic archives of theses and dissertations. The purpose of this article is to examine the applicability of the DSpace platform for building an electronic archive of theses and dissertations, guided by a formal model previously developed by the author. The study seeks to evaluate how well DSpace’s functional capabilities align with the technical and organizational requirements defined by the model. By doing so, the research aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for Ukrainian higher education institutions that are planning to build electronic archives for theses and dissertations. Methodologically, to assess the alignment between the model’s requirements and DSpace’s capabilities, the study systematically examines the platform’s architecture, functional modules, and configuration options, as documented in the official DSpace 8.x technical documentation. Special attention is paid to the implementation of configurable entities, customizable workflows, metadata exchange protocols (such as OAI-PMH), and user interface localization. Сonclusion. The analysis confirms that the DSpace platform offers a robust and flexible foundation for developing electronic archives of theses and dissertations in accordance with the formal model proposed by the author. The platform’s open-source nature and extensive documentation make it highly adaptable to the specific needs of Ukrainian higher education institutions.
