Ethical Perspectives on Moonlighting and Its Influence on Employee Loyalty
The evolving dynamics of the global workforce, especially in the Indian context, have brought moonlighting holding a secondary job alongside a primary one into sharp focus. This paper explores the ethical dimensions of moonlighting and its influence on employee loyalty, organizational trust, and human resource management. With the rise of hybrid work models and the gig economy, moonlighting has become increasingly prevalent, raising moral, legal, and managerial concerns. Drawing on ethical theories such as utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue ethics, as well as psychological contract and organizational commitment models, the study examines both the enablers and deterrents of dual employment. Through an analysis of Indian companies, HR policies, and socio-legal contexts, the paper highlights how moonlighting can either foster engagement and skill development or lead to burnout, reduced commitment, and data security risks. The findings suggest that ethically informed HR practices grounded in transparency, inclusivity, and flexibility are essential for managing moonlighting in a way that aligns with organizational values and enhances employee loyalty.
