Plantando a fronteira nos limites do reino: extrativismo, agricultura e contrabando nas governanças amazônicas da Audiência de Quito (ca. 1770 - ca. 1800)

This paper deals with the Spanish authorities' projects for the Amazon governorships of the Audiencia of Quito (provinces of Quijos, Macas, Jaen, and Maynas), with the aim of increasing exploitation and agricultural activities. The chronological frame is related to the administrative restructuring for such spaces. It analyzes how native plants were systematically exploited as a resource to create new populations, attract, and secure indigenous settlements and territorial defense against Portuguese incursions. It also examines the smuggling of cultivated and/or traded products as part of the economic and socio-political dynamics of the Andean-Amazon border areas of the Kingdom of Quito.
