Hulpverlening door Slachtofferhulp Nederland na (huiselijk) geweld: een vergelijking tussen slachtoffers van huiselijk geweld en slachtoffers van niet-huiselijk geweld
Assistance provided by Victim Support Netherlands after (domestic) violence: A comparison between victims of domestic violence and victims of non-domestic violence In this study, the difference in support received between victims of domestic violence and non-domestic violence by Victim Support Netherlands (VSN) in the period 2017-2021 was investigated using microdata from Statistics Netherlands. The results suggest that these groups differ both demographically and in terms of needs for support. Victims of domestic violence were mainly women, were on average older, had a lower socio-economic status and were more often single parents at the time of their registration with VSN than victims of non-domestic violence. Victims of non-domestic violence were mainly referred by the police, while victims of domestic violence often first sought help through other channels such as general practitioners or social workers before they ended up at VSN. The type of support also differed: informing was the most common service for both groups, but legal support was the next most common type of support for victims of domestic violence. Psychosocial support was less common for victims of domestic violence. Victims of non-domestic violence made use of legal and psychosocial support and made least use of services to recover damages. Based on these insights, recommendations are made for practice and further research.
