Trauma Bonding and Toxic Relationships: A Study on the Characters Pallavi and Govind in Manu Ashokan's Uyare
The characters Pallavi and Govind from the Malayalam movie Uyare (2019) are why this research explores the complex dynamics of trauma bonding and toxic relationships. The film, which Manu Ashokan directed, tells the story of Pallavi, a budding pilot, whose life drastically changes because of Govind, her boyfriend, acting abusively (emotionally and physically) and controllingly. The purpose of this study is to investigate the psychological foundations of trauma bonding, a phenomenon in which victims form emotional bonds with their abusers and frequently mistake abuse for affection and nurturing. The study demonstrates how Pallavi's tenacity and path to self-empowerment starkly contrast with Govind's deceptive strategies by examining significant scenes and character interactions. The study emphasizes how critical it is to identify and deal with toxic relationships, stressing the necessity of recognizing and addressing toxic relationships, and emphasizing the need for societal awareness and support systems for victims of emotional and physical abuse. Through a detailed examination of the film's narrative and character development, the paper contributes to the wider debate about trauma bonding and its effects on mental health as well as personal development.
