Acoustic Leak Detection Method and Its Application for Improving the Reliability of Pipeline Valves

Approaches to the application of the acoustic method for detecting leaks in pipeline valves are considered. These methods are increasingly being used in the valve industry and valve operation. It is shown that the use of acoustics is most effective for analyzing the occurrence of leaks. The effectiveness of this method is based on better recognition of acoustic emission and determination of acoustic energy. Technical means of providing the acoustic method and its use in modern smart technologies in the valve industry are considered. Features of the selection of technical means of automation, in particular, remote sensors and features of their arrangement are shown. As a modern measuring tool implementing this method, the Neles ValvGuard leak detection and testing system is recommended. Based on a practical example of the application of this device, the features and capabilities of using the acoustic method are demonstrated, in particular, leak diagnostics and determining the state of the valve gate assembly during the partial stroke test (PST). Leak detection hardware and the most promising types of sensors are recommended. The implementation of the valve acoustic leak diagnostics is shown as an example. The dynamics of the leakage signal for one series of field tests is determined, and the monitored leakage signal through the valve seat is demonstrated in the form of a graph and a leak diagram. The acoustic method makes it possible to extend the service life of the valve without shutdown and maintenance for almost one year. The prospects for using the method, in particular, the use of sonography, are analyzed. It is shown that volumetric holograms based on the application of the acoustic method can reveal a much more informative picture of the origin, development and manifestation of leaks.
