An Adaptative IoT Based System for Smart Waste Collection
In this work, we will combine the Internet of Things (IoT) and waste collection to design and build two low-cost prototypes of a smart trash can. Modern level sensors are very efficient but relatively expensive. On the other hand, a classic sensor like the ultrasonic sensor HCSR04 is cheap but gives erroneous measures. The novelty is to add a servomotor with the HCSR04 to improve the performance of the angle measurement from the native 30 degrees of HCSR04, to more than 60 degrees for our prototype. The system provides real-time information on the filling rate of a bin and its location using a Smartphone and a mobile application (smart bin) developed for this purpose avoiding unnecessary trips for garbage trucks.
