Generation, Transmission, and Distribution System Resilience: A Holistic Approach for Enhancing the Power System Sustainability
In the face of accelerated global warming, bringing about more frequent and more severe extreme weather events, the need to improve the resiliency of electric power systems has become a global priority. This paper outlines an overall framework for assessing and enhancing the resilience of the grid's generation, transmission and distribution sectors. It further discusses critical issues raised by high-impact, low-frequency (HILF) events, and differences between reliability and resilience in power systems planning and operation. The paper addresses new trends such as those toward the embedding of DERs, VPPs and advanced automation in order to enhance the grid flexibility and sustainability. introduced, which is a candidate for standardized metrics of resilience and includes both system-level and operational-level aspects for assessing resilience of the power network. The work also highlights the significance of policy making, regulation, and stakeholder engagement in promoting resiliency aims. This comprehensive perspective seeks to inform utilities, regulators, and researchers about making a resilient, adaptable, and sustainable energy system ready for future disruptors.
