NATURAL LUTETIUM RADIOACTIVITY IN PET DEVICES WITH LUTETIUM SCINTILATION DETECTORS: INFLUENCE ON THE DIAGNOSTIC RESULT, CALIBRATION AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Today's standard PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scanners use scintillation detectors based on lutetium, which contain the Lu-176 radioisotope. In this paper, the mass fraction and relevant radioactivity of this isotope were explicitly calculated using a commercial device as an example. The analysis of the obtained result examined and discussed its impact on clinical work, the calibration procedures of PET scanners, as well as the safety and health of exposed workers, the general population, and the environment, including the period after the device is no longer in use.
