Exploring the therapeutic synergism of Vardhamana Pippali Rasayana with a standard of care in nonsmall cell lung cancer

Abstract Lung cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortality among males worldwide, with a disproportionately high fatality rate. The absence of early symptoms and the lack of routine screening programs contribute to delayed diagnosis, ultimately leading to poor prognostic outcomes. Despite significant advancements in targeted therapies, challenges such as late-stage presentation, financial constraints, and treatment-related toxicities continue to limit clinical success, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. We report the case of a 38-year-old male diagnosed with Stage IV nonsmall cell lung cancer, who was managed using an integrative approach combining Pippali ( Piper longum Linn.) with standard of care chemotherapy. The patient demonstrated significant clinical improvement, as evidenced by an enhanced performance status, improved quality of life as measured by the EORTC LC13 scale, and partial tumor response on follow-up positron emission tomography-computed tomography imaging. Importantly, the integrative approach did not lead to any treatment-related toxicities, with the patient maintaining normal hematological and biochemical parameters throughout the treatment course. At present, the patient remains asymptomatic, has resumed daily activities, and continues treatment. This case highlights the potential safety and effectiveness of integrating Ayurvedic interventions such as Pippali Rasayana with conventional oncology care to improve clinical outcomes in resource-limited settings. Further research is warranted to explore the mechanistic pathways and broader clinical applicability of such integrative strategies in lung cancer management.

The absence of early symptoms and the lack of routine screening programs contribute to delayed diagnosis, ultimately leading to poor prognostic outcomes. We report the case of a 38-year-old male diagnosed with Stage IV nonsmall cell lung cancer, who was managed using an integrative approach combining Pippali ( Piper longum Linn.) with standard of care chemotherapy.
