Metabolite profiling of ethanol extract of Evolvulus alsinoides and its antiproliferative study on human breast cancer cell lines

AbstractBreast cancer is an invasive disease. It is a pathological condition in which abnormal breast cells grow out of control and form tumors. It most commonly occurs due to a genetic mutation or damage to DNA. The present study was undertaken to elucidate the major bioactive phytoconstituents and the assessment of antiproliferative effect of ethanol extract obtained aerial parts of Evolvulus alsinoides L. Investigation of antiproliferative in-vitro activity of E. alsinoides ethanol aerial part extract was conducted against human breast cancer (MCF-7) cell lines through Thiazolyl Blue (MTT) assay. Metabolite profiling for the major phytocomponents was conducted using Gas Chromatography/mass spectrometry technique. Depiction of mass spectrum fingerprint of phytoconstituents had done through NIST spectral library. Alkaloids and diterpenoids were the major phytocompounds found in aerial part ethanol extract of E. alsinoides. The ethanolic extract revealed markedly significant activity during antiproliferative assay under given experimental conditions. Gas Chromatography /Mass Spectroscopic analysis identified twelve phytoconstituents in the extract. The study validates existence of distinct phytoconstituents like 5,6,7,7a,12,12a-hexahydro-7-methyl-8,9-bis(methoxy)-12a-hydroxy-2,3-methylenedioxy-azadibenz [a,e] azulen-12-one [Alkaloid]; kaurane-3, 16, 18-triol-3, 18-diacetate, (3. a., 4. ß) [Diterpenoid]; tricosanoic acid [fatty acid]; aspidofractinine, 6-hydroxy-1-methyl [Alkaloid]; 4-hydroxy-2,2,7,7-tetramethyl-octahydro-2H-dibenzofuran-1,8-dione[benzofuran]; narcissidine [Alkaloid]; 2, 20-cycloaspidospermidine,6,7-didehydro-1,3-dimethyl, (2. a., 3. ß., 5. a., 12. ß., 19.a., 20R) [Alkaloid]; 12-hydroxycamptothecin [alkaloid]; picolinyl 11-docosenoate [Fatty Acid]; periplocymarin [glycoside]; buphandrin [alkaloid]. Evaluation of antiproliferative in-vitro study of the ethanol aerial part extract of the selected plant demonstrated very remarkable inhibitory effect against MCF-7. The research study identifies novel phytocompounds in Evolvulus alsinoides extract, expanding existing knowledge on its phytochemical profile.
