Investigations on antihyperlipidemic activity of Moringa oleifera oil in poloxamer induced DDY mice and GC-MS based metabolites profiling

AbstractMoringa oil has been widely used globally and is traded in online markets with several usage claims’ one of which is related to reducing hyperlipidemia. We investigated the chemical content of Moringa seed oil from Blora, Indonesia using GC-MS and analyzed the effect in Poloxamer-induced hyperlipidemia in male Deutschland Denken Yoken (DDY) mice. Twenty-four male DDY mice weighing 20–25 g were randomly divided into four groups. Group I was given NaCl 0.9% per oral (p.o), group II was given Poloxamer 407 (P-407) 14 mg/20 g intraperitoneally (i.p) for 7 days and NaCl 0.9% per oral (p.o), group III was given Fenofibrate 0.52 mg/20 per oral (p.o) and group IV was given Moringa seed oil per oral (p.o) 0.4 mL/day. The result showed that Moringa oil contains 14 compounds including palmitic acid, oleic acid methyl ester, myristic acid, lauric acid, methyl palmitate, and oleic acid amide. The administration of Poloxamer increased total cholesterol (TC) levels (168.53 ± 1.3) and triglyceride (TG) levels (1.84 ± 0.01) mg/dl compared to normal group 89.77 ± 0.5 and 0.47 ± 0.02 mg/dl, respectively. Treatment with Moringa oil significantly (p<0.05) decreased TC (128.72 ± 1.0) and TG (0.98 ± 0.03) mg/dl compared to control and Fenofibrate (138.78 ± 1,1) and (1.47 ± 0.02) mg/dl, respectively. The presence of fatty acids in Moringa oleifera seed oil played a significant role in reducing lipid levels in DDY mice with Poloxamer-induced hyperlipidemia, thereby exhibiting a hypolipidemic impact.
