Road map to recovery after surgical management of osteitis pubis: A periodized approach for sprinters
Groin pain is a complex condition involving anatomical structures, with osteitis pubis (OP) being a specific manifestation frequently coexisting with other pathologies. This case report describes the effective postoperative management of OP in a 19-year-old female professional sprinter using an individualized rehabilitation protocol based on Vermeil’s hierarchy. The patient presented with chronic recurrent OP/pubic bone stress confirmed through MRI and clinical examination. The rehabilitation program, guided by clinical objectives and functional criteria, resulted in a successful return to full training and play within 20 and 22 weeks, respectively, with no recurrence of symptoms during a 3-month follow-up. This case highlights the importance of utilizing a structured rehabilitation approach to ensure optimal recovery and performance in high-performance athletes with groin injuries such as OP.
