A study to assess the knowledge regarding cervical cancer and its prevention among undergraduate students in selected Colleges of Bengaluru with a view to develop information leaflet

Background: Cervical cancer, a major public health issue, is caused by persistent HPV infections. According to WHO, cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women globally, and cervical cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women in India. It can be prevented through regular screening, like Pap smears, and vaccination. Despite advancements, including HPV vaccines, cervical cancer remains a global challenge, emphasizing the need for awareness and prevention efforts [1]. Methodology: A descriptive study was conducted to assess the knowledge regarding cervical cancer among undergraduate students in selected colleges of Bengaluru to develop an information leaflet. 100 female undergraduate students were selected who fulfilled inclusion criteria, by using non-probability convenient sampling technique. Prior to data collection formal permission from the concerned authority and written consent was taken from the participants. The knowledge of cervical cancer and its prevention was assessed by administering a structured knowledge questionnaire. Results: The study results revealed that 52% of students had adequate knowledge of cervical cancer, 48% had moderate knowledge, and none of the participants in the group of inadequate knowledge. Conclusion: The study concludes that while the majority of the students had adequate knowledge of cervical cancer, still significant gaps remain in understanding early screening and HPV vaccination. Educational efforts are essential to improve awareness on cervical cancer and prevention strategies.
