Estimation of the Average Energy of Auroral Electrons from the Intensity Ratio of 630.0 and 427.8 nm Emissions

The dependence of the average energy of the auroral electron flux on the intensity ratio of 630.0 and 427.8 nm emissions was considered. Numerical modeling was used to study the influence produced on this dependence by three factors: the shape of the energy spectrum of the auroral electron flux, the concentration of atomic oxygen in the neutral atmosphere, and the concentration of nitrogen oxide. It was shown that the influence of these factors on the averaged dependence does not exceed 20% at I630.0/I427.8 ratios in the range from 0.1 to 10, which is characteristic of polar auroras. An analytical approximation of the calculated dependence of the average energy of precipitating electrons on I630.0/I427.8 was presented.
