Characterization and Power Analysis of Solar Cells with Different Geometries

With rapid increase in population, the living standards of human beings are also increasing at the same rate. When these two factors are considered together, it is a natural consequence that the increase in global energy demand is inevitable. It is known that 80% of this demand, which is constantly increasing every single day, is met by fossil fuels. With the occurrence of the negative effects of fossil fuels, mankind has turned to renewable energy sources that are reliable, uninterrupted, clean and most importantly unlimited. At this point, especially with the breakthroughs made in the last 25 years, solar energy stands out with the potential energy that rate it contains. However, today, the efficiency of commercially produced solar systems in field conditions remains only around 17%. Therefore, one of the important issues for researchers is to increase the efficiency of these systems and to prevent efficiency losses due to design conditions. The aim of this study is that analyze the power distributions in different cell geometries with the finite element method using GriddlerSolar2.5 in order to support different studies in the literature and to breed new ideas for future studies. In this study, nine different cell geometries and their fundamental power behaviors (e.g. power output, resistance losses, recombination losses, shading losses) are comparatively discussed.
