Lipoma of the Buccal Fat Pad: Systematic Review and Report of a Case
ABSTRACT Introduction Lipomas in the oral cavity are uncommon, defined by the abnormal proliferation of mature adipocytes. When they arise from the buccal fat pad (BFP), these lipomas frequently impact both the cosmetic appearance and the functional aspects of the face. Objectives The aim of the present review is to investigate the incidence of the BFP lipoma. Methods A systematic review was conducted using PRISMA with PROSPERO ID code CRD42024613044. An exhaustive search of PubMed, Web Of Science, and Scopus, using the PICO format was carried out. The quality of the included studies was evaluated according to the Pierson Scale. Results From a total of 106 studies, 11 were included. Six studies had scores of 9–10, five had scores or 7–8. A case of a 72 year old man with left BFP lipoma and its surgical enucleation was reported. Conclusions With the limitations of the present study, lipoma are rare benign neoplasm of the head and neck. In particular, its presentation of the BFP is extremely uncommon. It should be excised when it causes functional or aesthetic concerns, with careful attention to the surgical technique to ensure optimal outcomes.
