Surgical Outcomes of Endoscopic Tympanoplasty with Platelet-rich Plasma
Abstract Background: Chronic otitis media (COM) is a widely prevalent disease in the developing countries. Tympanoplasty is a commonly performed procedure in otorhinolaryngology for the treatment of COM. It can be done using a microscope or an endoscope. Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is the processed liquid portion of autologous blood with a platelet concentration higher than the baseline, and it is used to augment the healing process and to improve the graft uptake. Our study was conducted to determine the efficacy of the use of PRP in postsurgery tympanic membrane perforation healing and hearing improvement in patients undergoing endoscopic tympanoplasty surgery. Aims and Objectives: (1) To assess the proportion of graft uptake in patients undergoing endoscopic tympanoplasty surgery using PRP and (2) To assess the hearing outcome in the study population. Methodology: Fifty-six patients were studied; all the patients underwent endoscopic tympanoplasty surgery with PRP. Graft uptake assessment was done every 2 weeks for 3 months, and hearing assessment was done at the end of the 3 rd month. Results: Our study showed that all the patients (100%) had a successful graft uptake at the end of the 4 th and 6 th week, whereas 55 (98.2%) patients had a successful graft uptake in the 8 th week and 54 (96.4%) patients in the 10 th and 12 th week. Conclusion: Based on our study, we conclude that the use of PRP increases the graft uptake in the tympanoplasty procedure and improves hearing threshold. The use of PRP is safe and can be prepared easily. We propagate its use in routine tympanoplasty.
