A Decade of excellence: Charting the growth and future of psychiatry in Telangana
Reflecting on a Decade of Growth and Vision As we mark ten years of remarkable progress of Indian Psychiatric Society – Telangana State Branch (IPS-TSB), it is both a privilege and a moment of pride to reflect on our collective journey and contributions to psychiatric care, education, and community engagement in the state and beyond. This remarkable progress has been made possible through the visionary leadership and dedicated service of our past presidents, office bearers, and editors. Their foresight and unwavering commitment laid a strong foundation that continues to support our current initiatives. Each milestone achieved—be it academic, clinical, or community-based—has been rooted in their spirit of service and collaboration. Our society has evolved into a dynamic platform that integrates scientific excellence with socially responsive mental healthcare. From organizing national and zonal conferences to implementing impactful public awareness campaigns, IPS-TSB has championed both academic and outreach missions. Special emphasis on issues like suicide prevention, substance use disorders, online behavioural addictions, and student mental health, reflects our timely and context-sensitive approach to psychiatry. The Telangana Journal of Psychiatry, our official academic publication, stands as a symbol of our intellectual growth. It has served as a credible platform for original research, clinical observations, and policy discussions— owing to the dedicated efforts of our past and present editorial teams. Looking ahead, IPS-TSB remains committed to strengthening professional camaraderie, fostering young talent, advocating for progressive mental health policies, and building bridges with national and international organizations. I take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude to all who have contributed to the society’s legacy. Let us continue to work with unity, purpose, and compassion to advance mental health for all. Beyond our institutional achievements, our greatest strength lies in our commitment to community psychiatry. The Growth of Community Psychiatry in Telangana The development of community psychiatry in Telangana over the past decade stands as a shining example of what a united and committed professional body can achieve. The Indian Psychiatric Society – Telangana State Branch (IPS-TSB) has not only nurtured academic excellence but has also actively championed mental health awareness and service delivery at the grassroots level. One of the most notable outcomes of this collective effort is our recognition as the Best State Branch at the national level for three consecutive years—an achievement that reflects the tireless work, vision, and dedication of our primary members, senior mentors, and past office bearers. This recognition is not the result of individual effort, but rather the outcome of teamwork and shared purpose. From organizing rural mental health camps and school-based stress management programs to launching awareness campaigns on substance use, suicide prevention, and online behavioral addictions, IPS-TSB has consistently prioritized the community dimension of psychiatric practice. Our members have gone beyond clinical walls to address the real-world mental health needs of diverse populations—urban and rural, young and old, marginalized and mainstream. What sets Telangana’s community psychiatry apart is its inclusive and participatory spirit. Members from all districts, academic institutions, and private practice have actively contributed—whether by leading initiatives, mentoring younger professionals, conducting workshops, or building public-private collaborations. Our initiatives have addressed key public health priorities, including: • Substance use awareness and deaddiction outreach • Suicide prevention in high-risk populations • Mental health literacy among students and parents • Collaboration with NGOs, media, and government bodies. This grassroots movement has been supported by a strong organizational structure, visionary leadership, and an ethos of mutual respect and learning. It is this unique combination that has allowed IPS-TSB to flourish as a model of community psychiatry practice in India. As we move forward, let us continue to uphold this spirit of collaboration and service. Let us empower the next generation of psychiatrists to carry forward this legacy and deepen our commitment to compassionate, accessible, and community-driven mental healthcare. Showcasing Academic Leadership The Indian Psychiatric Society – Telangana State Branch (IPS-TSB) has consistently demonstrated academic leadership by successfully organizing a wide range of prestigious conferences at the international, national, and zonal levels. These events not only reflect our branch’s organizational capability but also serve as a testimony to the vibrant academic culture that defines Telangana’s psychiatric community. Over the years, IPS-TSB has taken great pride in hosting high-impact platforms that bring together mental health professionals, researchers, policy-makers, and students for meaningful exchange of ideas. From international collaborations to landmark national events, and regionally significant zonal conferences, our ability to consistently deliver excellence has positioned Telangana as a hub of psychiatric scholarship and innovation. These conferences have featured cutting-edge symposia, workshops, and plenaries on topics ranging from psychopharmacology and neuropsychiatry to public mental health, addiction, and digital behavioural disorders. They have encouraged evidence-based clinical practices, research dissemination, and cross-disciplinary engagement, reinforcing our branch’s commitment to lifelong learning and capacity building. More importantly, these academic events have created opportunities for early-career psychiatrists, postgraduate students, and private practitioners to engage with national and international faculty, enhancing their exposure and inspiring future leadership. Our success in organizing these events would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of past and present office bearers, organizing committees, and member volunteers. It is their shared passion for psychiatry and academic excellence that has made Telangana’s presence felt on every major psychiatric platform in India. As IPS-TSB nears its tenth anniversary, we reflect on a journey rooted in a vision to strengthen psychiatric care, education, and community engagement in Telangana—a vision that continues to guide us today and into the future.
