Linking Cultural Cities and Tourism Discourses in Korea Using Text Mining: Focusing on the Case of Jeonju
Purpose This study aims to empirically analyze the background of Jeonju-si being selecte d as a cultural city and how traditional cultural assets (Hanok, Korean food, Hanji, etc.) ar e fused with the tourism industry to form a cultural city discourse online. Through this, we aim to examine the linkage structure between cultural and tourism policies. Method From January 2023 to December 2024, approximately 5,000 online news and soci al media texts were collected and preprocessed, including removal of duplicates and adver tisements, morphological analysis, and stopword processing. Afterwards, key words were d erived through TF-IDF analysis, and the topic structure of the discourse was identified thro ugh LDA topic modeling. Results The analysis results showed that keywords such as ‘Jeonju’, ‘culture’, ‘tourism’, ‘city’, and ‘tradition’ were central, and it was confirmed that traditional cultural assets, city branding, and the tourism industry were closely linked. Through LDA analysis, 10 major discourses were derived, including ‘culture and arts and regional development’, ‘festivals and cultural events’, and ‘Hanok village and traditional tourism’. Conclusion Jeonju City’s cultural city policy was confirmed to be an integrated policy that reinterprets traditional cultural assets in a modern way and encompasses tourism, urban re generation, and resident participation, and text mining was shown to be an effective tool f or analyzing online discourse structures. In the future, time series analysis and qualitative research are needed in parallel.
