Yuri Krizhanich in Russia: Difficulty to be a Classic Author Yuri Krizhanich. Politika / ed. A.P. Bogdanova, transl. and comm. A.L. Goldberg. Moscow: Publishing group «Alma Mater»; «Gaudeamus», 2023. 438 p. (Epochs. Middle Ages. Texts)
This is the third reprint of the first part of the manuscript of Yuri Krizhanich’s Politika (Conversations on Power), published in 1965. It contains only the translated part of this publication, but it has an extensive article by A. P Bogdanov, a specialist in the history of Russia in the 17th century, who highlights the work of the author of the treatise in a certain way: in his opinion, Krizhanich did not know and did not understand Russians, exaggerated their backwardness and did not know about their commitment to «free will» and enlightenment; all the time he deceived them, «rolled around like cheese in butter», and dreamed only of a union, i.e. of the subordination of the Russians to the pope. His knowledge was very much exaggerated and was not very necessary for Russia. Nevertheless, detailing the biography of Krizhanich, A.P. Bogdanov gives credit to his persistence and purposefulness. The reader will ask: Is that all? So the reputation of the famous Croatian, essentially a classic, is false? And was it worth it to republish his text once again?
