The book focuses on the history of historical writing of the northwestern Christian territories of the Iberian Peninsula (Asturias, León, Castile and Navarra) and the related historiographical tradition about the Cid from the end of the ninth to the end of the twelfth century. Considering the sources of this period, Georges Martin conducts detailed lexical and onomastic studies, refutes the previously established dating of the sources, and offers a different solution to controversial issues and an idea of the historiographical tradition of the ninth to thirteenth centuries.
