Synthesis and characterization of triazole-based coordination polymers using mercapto-succinic acid: Spectroscopic, thermal, and morphological insights
This study presents the synthesis and comprehensive characterization of novel coordination polymers derived from 3,5-di(pyridin-4-yl)-4H-1,2,4-triazol-4-amine and mercapto-succinic acid, coordinated with nickel(II), manganese(II), and cobalt(II) metal ions. The triazole-based ligand was synthesized and structurally confirmed using proton nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The resulting coordination polymers were further characterized through infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis, which revealed bidentate coordination through carboxylate and triazole donor atoms. The asymmetric and symmetric stretching vibrations of the carboxylate groups exhibited frequency separations (Δν values) ranging from 172 to 197 reciprocal centimetres, indicative of a chelating coordination mode. Thermogravimetric results demonstrated multi-step decomposition with thermal stability extending beyond 300 degrees Celsius. Upon heating at 700 degrees Celsius, the metal complexes were converted into their corresponding metal oxide nanoparticles. These nanoparticles were examined using field-emission scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, confirming crystalline morphology with particle sizes ranging from 60 to 110 nanometers. The structural integrity, thermal resistance, and nanoscale characteristics of the synthesized materials suggest their promising applicability in catalysis, gas adsorption, and sensor-based technologies. • Synthesized triazole-based coordination polymers using mercapto-succinic acid as a linker. • Characterized the ligand (BAT) using FTIR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy. • Analysed thermal stability and binding modes of the metal complexes via FTIR and TGA. • Calcination produced metal oxide nanoparticles, confirmed by FE-SEM and EDS. • Coordination polymers show potential for catalysis, gas storage, and sensors.
