Analyze, Design and Implementation of MPWM Interleaved DC-DC Converter with Voltage Doubler for EV Applications

The increasing demands of electric vehicles (EVs) necessitate enhancement in charging processes to deliver efficiency and effectiveness. Conventional DC-DC converters are plagued with high switching losses, low efficiency, and high current ripple, all of which compromise charging performance and affect component lifespan. In this paper, an interleaved DC-DC converter with a voltage doubler and Modified Pulse Width Modulation (MPWM) is presented to address these limitations. The merit of the proposed system lies in the integration of an interleaved configuration with a voltage doubler and MPWM control, which complement each other to enhance efficiency, reduce switching losses, and minimize current ripple. The interleaved configuration provides current sharing, and consequently, alleviates thermal stress and extends component lifespan, while the voltage doubler increases the output voltage, making the system suitable for high-voltage EV battery charging. The converter operation, control strategy, and MPWM method are extensively examined. The performance and efficiency of the system under varying loading conditions are validated using simulation and experimental results, which promote its potential as an eco-friendly and efficient solution for EV charging stations.
