Control Strategies and Parameters Design for Hydro-Photovoltaic Complementary Systems
Hydro-photovoltaic complementary systems, which integrated through VSC-HVDC transmission, provide a promising solution to mitigate the intermittency of renewable energy sources by capitalizing on the complementary nature of water flow and solar radiation. However, variations in weather conditions, water flow, and solar irradiance present challenges in system control and coordination. This paper explores advanced control strategies for optimizing energy utilization and maintaining stability. It investigates grid-following and grid-forming converter control methods, highlighting their connection with synchronization mechanisms and limitations. Appropriate control methods are developed for photovoltaic station and sending-end VSC station based on system topology and transmission capacity, along with a proposed parameter tuning methodology to ensure stable and efficient operation.
