AI Based Real Time License Plate Recognition Redefining Toll Collection

Fastag is heavily relied upon for the current e-wallet based model for toll collection and while it is indeed smart, tag-cloning, balance synchronization issue and misplaced tags are some of its limitations. In order to tackle these challenges, we present the automatic number plate recognition (ANPR)-based toll collection system that requires no use of FASTag rather users can pay by their license plate. We present a practical usage of computer vision for plate recognition technologies utilizing YOLOv5 on IoT devices or Raspberry Pi 4 with ultrasonic sensor for vehicle detection. After detecting a vehicle with the ultrasonic sensor, one of the cameras is activated and takes a picture of the license plate. The number is scanned using OCR and the toll is charged to a digital wallet linked to the vehicle. It enhances security, curbs fraud and facilitates the toll collection process.
