Immobilized Nano Commercial Titanium Dioxide Semi-Conductor on Microscopic Glass Substrate for Photocatalysis of Acid Orange 7 Reactive Dye Bath Effluent in a Batch Mode Photocatalytic Reactor

This paper investigated the photocatalytic degradation rate of dye Acid Orange 7 on particulate layers prepared from five commercial TiO2 catalysts, i.e. Gamma, Delta, Zeta, kappa, and sigma, under UV light irradiation. The coated particulate layers were prepared by deposition from an aqueous TiO2 suspension of concentration 10 g.L-1 immobilized on a degreased microscopic glass of dimensions (75mm×25mm), forming a catalyst loading 0.5 mg/cm2. A four-position photocatalytic reactor operating in batch mode was used for dye degradation experiments. In addition, Sylvania LynxS, 11W tube light of wavelength between 320-400 nm with maximum irradiation wavelength at λ=355 nm, was the source of UV light. Changes in dye concentration during irradiation were determined using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The initial concentration of Acid Orange 7 dye used in the experiment was 1×10-4 M. The results show the photocatalytic degradation rate as follows: [(Gamma=1.95×10-5 mol. L-1); (Delta= 2.47×10-5 mol. L-1); (Zeta=1.65×10-5 mol. L-1); (Kappa=1.50×10-5 mol. L-1); (Sigma =2.61×10-6 mol. L-1)]. The particulate layer prepared from Delta exhibited the highest photocatalytic degradation rate of Acid Orange 7 dye from all commercial catalysts and sigma the least. The study confirms an effective dye effluent treatment in a TiO2/UV mechanism in a batch-mode photoreactor.
