Alegorías euroafroamericanas en el viaje mágico de Carvino
In 1798, Charles Brockden Brown published in the United States his novel Wieland. Five years later, Brown began the serialization of a sequel based on the adventures of one of the main characters, Carwin, entitled Memoirs of Carwin the Biloquist. In 1808 a free, unauthorized translation was published in France by Pigault-Maubaillarcq. This process was finally completed when Luis Monfort translated the French version into Spanish (1818), including variations that set his version far from the original. The most interesting aspect of the Spanish version, on which this proposal is focused, is the inclusion of a new version of Carwin’s (now Carvino) memoir(s). Due to all the aforementioned aspects, the objective of this proposal is to analyze and to evaluate how Monfort built an adventurous tale in which lost thrones and allegories are constant and become the axis around which the plot is organized.
