Oteiza (y Arteche, Pelay Orozco y Martín-Santos): lectura insólita de Baroja
During the nineteen sixties, Jorge Oteiza (1908-2003) devoted himself to a rewriting of the discourse of Basque nationalism from the viewpoint of culture. In order to do that he formulated an essentialist idea of «Basque style» whose main representative was, surprisingly enough, Pío Baroja, who had repeatedly discarded Basque nationalism in quite bitter terms. Oteiza’s argument entails thus a (re)invention, of the tradition of Sabino Arana urged by the circumstances and mediated by his dialogue with some local friend writers and readers of Baroja such as Miguel Pelay Orozco and José de Arteche.
