Residential Warfare: Reframing Black Gang Life Films through an Empathetic Lens and the Expansion of the Conversation on Black Existence

Abstract: This commentary investigates the portrayal of Black existence in Gang Life narratives and introduces the term "Residential Warfare" films as a more encompassing and humanizing subgenre. Traditional Black Gang Life films, while diverse, often tend to simplify or sensationalize Black urban life. In contrast, Residential Warfare films emphasize the intricate challenges and interpersonal relationships within Black communities, moving away from mere transactions of violence. This proposed classification underscores the need for genuine portrayals, understanding the structural influences on gang culture, and advocating for a richer cinematic experience. Through this reframing, the paper calls for a more profound, layered depiction of Black urban tales, encouraging audiences to engage deeply, fostering empathy, and challenging biases.
