Umbilical Pilonidal Sinus and Role of Umbilicus Preserving Surgery

A BSTRACT Pilonidal sinus disease is one of the most common problems of the sacrococcygeal region. However, it can also occasionally occur in the axilla, groin, inter-digital web, inter-mammary areas, supra-pubic area, and umbilicus. Umbilical pilonidal sinus (UPS) is a rare condition, with the estimated incidence of 0.6%. Male sex, young age, hairiness in the back, deep navel, and poor personal hygiene were found to be predisposing factors for UPS. UPS could easily be missed and hence wrongly treated due to its rarity and lack of awareness about it among the physicians. Here, we present the case of a 28-year-old male with UPS, failed to respond with conservative measures. Hence, underwent umbilicus conserving surgery in form of wide excision of tract. After 6 months of follow-up, there was no evidence of recurrence of disease with cosmetically promising results.
