Shifting China's Investment Strategy in Latin America: the case study of Peru

<ns3:p>The main aim of the article is to determine the leading interests and objectives in China’s investment policy towards Peru, in the broader context of China's growing interests in the Latin American region since the beginning of the 21st century. The article also aims to identify elements of continuity and change in China’s strategy towards Latin America in economic terms. China has shifted its investment in Latin America away from expensive infrastructure projects and toward sectors such as critical raw materials (including lithium), telecommunications, fintech, and renewable energy. The main hypothesis of the article assumes that despite the decline in overall investment volume, China has not shown any waning interest in investing in Latin America, but has changed its investment profile, as exemplified by Peru. The article also points to the specific conditions of Peru's economy, including its geographical location, natural resources, and market potential, which have led to Peru gaining the status of China's main partner country in the Latin American region.</ns3:p>
