Velázquez’s The Ladies-in-Waiting in Panels: Recreating a Painting within the Poetics of Comics

This work seeks to show how the characteristics of Velázquez's painting Las Meninas are reproduced in Santiago García and Javier Olivares' graphic novel Las meninas [The Ladies-in-Waiting] (2014) through comic codes, as well as the Baroque resources on which this graphic novel draws. It concludes that the creators of The Ladies-in-Waiting have written/painted a kind of essay on Las Meninas, based on the idea that the way we receive it today is determined by its pre- and post-history (the works by which it was inspired and those it inspired). Accordingly, in The Ladies-in-Waiting, several elements from both histories take their place in such a way that they support each other both thematically and visually. This comic book also presents, in comic form, the reflections of various critics on Las Meninas, taken from the book Otras Meninas, edited by Fernando Marías (1995).
