The Effects by Rough Surfaces on Target Signatures: A New Decoupled Approach

The different effects that an ocean-like surface and a land-like surface will have on a target's radar signature are investigated for both HH and VH polarizations. A new decoupled approach, based on a four-path model, is presented which provides physical insight on multi-path interaction between target and surface. An X-band example problem using a square perfectly conducting plate target suspended above the rough surface is compared with a conventional Monte Carlo method.

Abstract

The different effects that an ocean-like surface and a land-like surface will have on a target's radar signature are investigated for both HH and VH polarizations. A new decoupled approach, based on a four-path model, is presented which provides physical insight on multi-path interaction between target and surface. An X-band example problem using a square perfectly conducting plate target suspended above the rough surface is compared with a conventional Monte Carlo method.
