IoT-Enabled GNSS-based System for Real-Time Ionospheric Scintillation Monitoring

Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning depends on the integrity of signals traversing the ionosphere. However, ionospheric irregularities can induce rapid fluctuations in signal amplitude and phase, known as scintillations, which degrade positioning accuracy and reliability. Traditional ionospheric scintillation monitors are often expensive and fixed in location, limiting widespread monitoring and real-time analysis. To address this, we propose an IoT-enabled, low-cost GNSS-based prototype for monitoring ionospheric amplitude scintillations. The system leverages IoT technologies, integrating off-the-shelf GNSS receivers with real-time data transmission capabilities to compute the S4 index—a critical parameter for quantifying amplitude scintillations for all the visible satellites. The processed S4 data is automatically uploaded to a cloud database, eliminating the need for manual interaction with the system. A web-based dashboard provides remote access to the data, allowing multiple users to visualize real-time scintillation activity from anywhere, ensuring seamless monitoring and analysis. Leveraging IoT technology, this portable and scalable system surpasses traditional monitoring methods by enabling seamless, real-time ionospheric observation. Its integration of cloud-based data storage, remote accessibility, and automated processing ensures continuous, hands-free monitoring, to improve the reliability of GNSS-based navigation in dynamic ionospheric conditions.
