Maximizing Energy Efficiency in Wireless Sensor Networks for IoT with Advanced Techniques and Solutions
The Internet of Things (IoT) technologies has grown rapidly, and one vital result is to highlight the WSN segment towards technological innovation. In this regard, one of the most significant challenges is the efficiency optimization of energy; a principal criterion for sustainability and viability of such networks. This paper discusses the development of energy-efficient technology for IoT-based WSNs and emerging threats and possible solutions. It starts with an introduction to the IoT framework, highlighting wSNs and the need to achieve energy efficiency. Then, attention is turned to the most recent contributions in energy-efficient technologies, such as novel hardware solutions along with lightweight protocols and adaptive algorithms aimed at improving sensing network lifetime and operational performance. Scalability, security implications, and environmental impacts are critically discussed in terms of challenges. Economic elements of cost effectiveness against energy conservation are also covered. This study reviews novel advances in the field, highlights areas where newer methodologies are needed and provides future research paths. The analysis shows that despite significant advances in the field of energy efficiency optimization in IoT WSNs, many challenges still have to be addressed for full realization of such networks’ capabilities ensuring a significate impact within an active energy zone for IoT.
